New Aleš South Bohemia Gallery | České Budějovice | CZE
Project for architectural competition. The main vision was to create a building that is as open and communicative as possible at the ground floor level. To create a gallery that will allow some of the art to enter the public space instead of being confined to the halls.
Annotation:
Connecting urban space with exhibition space...
Communicating outward through changeable art on the terrace...
We preserve and present valuable exhibits...we are the New Alš South Bohemia Gallery
A gallery that is both an open and inviting pavilion in the park and a safe place to store valuables. A house that can be an exhibition showcase inviting passers-by to stop and visit, a canvas inspiring artists to create. A gallery that has context with the trees in the park, the arcades of the adjacent streets, the exposed bed of the Mill Drain, the ancient walls and much more. A gallery with an interior space that can be walked through from the street to the square. A building that allows greenery to grow on it. A gallery that is a confident partner to the dignified historical buildings of České Budějovice and the presented artworks.
The chosen solution combines multiple contextual approaches and visions. The design responds to future more user-friendly public realm treatments, objects in the surrounding area and takes into account other appropriate principles through which architecture can be approached.
The lower part of the building is designed as a structural pavilion, as open as possible. The main entrance and lobby, museum shop, café, multifunctional hall and other necessary facilities are designed at the plaza level. Where there are no windows, shopfronts are designed for changeable installations. Nowhere is there a full wall around the perimeter, something is happening behind every part of the façade. On the second floor, a co-working room, a library, a smaller exhibition hall and larger administrative facilities are proposed. The ground floor is flanked by an arcade that forms a seamless transition between the public realm and the building. The second floor is surrounded by a gallery with greenery and an area designed for outdoor art exhibitions. The third and fourth floors contain more than 2,000m2 of exhibition rooms and additional storage space.
